On the August 2 - 4, 2003 long weekend, I took a "Snow & Ice Long Weekend" course through Yamnuska. I was joined by seven other participants from Calgary as well as two mountain guides/instructors from Yamnuska. On the third day, we were joined by another Yamnuska guide to lead one of our three teams.

The first day covered safe walking on angled snow, climbing knots and snow anchors. We practiced on some snow fields near Hilda Peak, about 10km south of the Columbia Icefields area of Jasper NP. On the second day, we went onto the glacier coming down off of Mt. Athabasca to learn about proper crampon techniques on various ice conditions. We then roped up into two teams and climbed higher onto the glacier to a spot where we practiced crevasse rescue. On the third day, everyone successfully climbed Mt. Athabasca (3491m/11,453').

All the photos were taken using a Canon EOS Rebel Ti with a Canon EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 USM II Zoom lens and UV haze filter. Photos were then scanned using an HP ScanJet 3300C. The JPEG images were saved at about 90% quality (to reduce file size for web users) with some images reduced to 75% of their original size.
