Day 9 -- October 6 => Junbesi to Nuntala

Leaving our campsite by Apple Garden Lodge in Junbesi (2675m/8775') at 7:15am, we took our time this morning, stopping in Phurtyang Beni around 9:40am for cloud obscured views of Kusum Kangguru (6215m/20,390'). About 1/2 hour further along, we reached a viewpoint (3048m/10,000') where Mt. Everest could be seen, weather permitting. However, clouds were to dominate today so no views of Everest.

Descending to a suspension bridge over the Ringmo Khula at 2700m/8855', we stopped for lunch around 12pm. As we were eating lunch, it started to rain and it was funny watching Padam and others grab a tarp to put over the food. We left as it was still raining but lighter than before.

Tragsindho La (3071m/10,075')

By the time we had ascended to Ringo (2805m/9200'), it had stopped raining and we got a bit of sun. To continue working off lunch, it was a steady ascent up to Tragsindho La (3071m/10,075') for a 2:30pm rest stop.

On the descent from the pass, clouds were quickly forming and by the time we reached the Tragsindho Monastery, the sky was dark and we had pea soup fog. We checked out the monastery but discovered that it was closed. Down we went into the heavy fog and a threatening thunder storm. As the lodges of Nuntala (also known as Manidingma) came into view, the rain started again. We reached our campsite in Nuntala (2194m/7198') at 4:30pm; fortunately our tents were already up.

Kusum Kangguru (6215m/20,390') just after sunset

Just after sunset, the clouds opened up in the eastern sky to reveal Kussum Kangguru once more in the fading light.
