Day 8 -- October 5 => Sete to Junbesi

Gutted section of Rhododendron forest

Leaving Sete (2575m/8448') at 7:20am, it was a strenuous ascent to Dagchu (2850m/9350'), 300m in less than 1km. The grade relented somewhat as we passed by rhododendron forest, parts of which had been cut down for firewood.

Padam surveying the damage.

Lunch stop at Tashi Tagyed lodge.

We arrived at Tashi Tagyed lodge (3440m/11,285') around 11am for lunch. The sky had quickly clouded over during the morning so even given our elevation, we did not have much of a view of the mountains.

Sarah, Jagat and Baboram descending from Lamjura La.

Passing another rhododendron grove on the way, we reached Lamjura La (3530m/11,582'), our highest point on our walk-in from Jiri to Lukla. The descent involved "countless" short switchbacks, reaching Tragdobuk (2860m/9380') a few hours after lunch. Another hour of gradual descent with a few ups brought us to Junbesi (2675m/8775'), our camp for the night.

Junbesi has a population of about 700 and there is a small power generating station but only part of the town has electricity.

For dinner, we had soup and popcorn for the entree. We all cracked up when Padam said I needed to try popcorn six times. The "six times" theme had been brought up by Sarah a few days ago. A friend of hers told her that one should not pass judgement on whether they liked something or not until they have tried it at least six times.
