Day 5 -- October 2 => Jiri to Shivalaya

Shivalaya

Shivalaya on the south bank of the Khimti Khola.

Leaving our campsite in Jiri at 8am, we headed off to the east end of Jiri and out to the open trail. Jiri, which has a hospital and a technical school, has a market section on the way out. A police check point is located here and we passed several soldiers as we left Jiri. Those would be the last Nepalese soldiers we would see until we reached Lukla, 7 days later.

The trail rises sharply from the Jiri valley and ascends to Patashe La (2380m/7,805'). At the pass we finally get our first glimpses of snow capped mountains. After a brief descent passing a school along the way, we arrived in Chitre for lunch just before 11am.

After lunch and a relaxing break under the noon sun, we began our descent to Shivalaya. About 10 minutes along, we ran into a Spaniard who was backtracking to find his camera. He later caught up with us at a tea house and told us he found his camera back at the lodge in Jiri. We crossed the suspension bridge over the Yelung Khola and up again to another tea house where we stopped for a coke (30 rp) and a piece of Nak cheese. Then down the trail to cross the suspension bridge (as seen in the photo above) to Shivalaya (1767m/5,800') and camp.
