- Canadian Himalayan Expeditions
- An Ontario company offering guided expeditions to Mt. Everest base camp
(17,600'/5365m). Minimum cost would be about $6,000 (CDN) to cover
airfare to Kathmandu and land expedition costs in Nepal. In October 2002,
I did the "Everest in Hillary's Footsteps" adventure with a five day extension
to climb Island Peak. See my Nepal 2002
pages for information and photos.
- Canadian Rockies.net
- Provides a travel planning guide for the Canadian Rockies with emphasis on the
five national parks (Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, Yoho and Waterton), Lake Louise,
and Canmore. This site is directed towards families and groups which are
interested in experiencing the Rockies using commercial services. This site
does not provide any tangible information for backcountry adventurists.
- Kananaskis Country
- An alternative to the overcrowded Banff and Jasper National Parks.
- Mountain Equipment Co-op
- A co-operative which sells equipment, clothing, books, maps, etc. for the
outdoor enthusiast. A lifetime membership costs just $5 (which has not
increased from the 1971 initial cost). MEC has stores in Vancouver, Calgary,
Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa and Halifax.
- Nova - Mt. Everest Expeditions
- An outstanding site for getting further information on the Mt. Everest expeditions
in 1999, 1997 and 1996 covered by the Nova PBS series. The 1999 expedition
investigated the 1924 summit attempt of George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, who may
have been the first to reach the summit. There are pictures of base
camp, camps I to IV and RealAudio sound files. As well, you can get a feel of what
it would be like to view down a crevasse in the Khumbu Icefall, the view from
camp II and of course a panoramic view from the summit by downloading the
QuickTime VR files. Highly recommended.
