Play Chess On-line
Caissa's Web A commercial service ($25 to $50 US/year) offering live and correspondence games with WWW and Java interfaces. Types of games though is far more limited than that offered by the Internet Chess Club. You can apply for a free 30 day trial membership.
Chess Hall of Fame Live The online site for USCF. As of summer 2002. you require a paid account to use Fixation on this server. As a result, there is no longer any direct support for using Fixation 2.x on CHFL.
chess.net A free site similar to FICS. There are Java and a "lite" windows interfaces for playing. For Macintosh enthusiasts, Fixation 2.x works with chess.net although Accuclock (the chess.net version of FICS timeseal) is not currently supported.
FICS The Free Internet Chess Server is similar to the ICC but registration is free. Typically, there will be a couple hundred players logged on at any one time. Only a handful of titled players make an appearance here, although GM Knez does provide free lectures from time to time. If you cannot afford the ICC, the FICS is the best alternative.
Free GNU server Play a free game against a server running the GNUChess engine.
GameKnot A web based playing site where you take turns making moves with your opponent.
Internet Chess Club Play blitz, bullet, standard, wild, bughouse and tournament games against international players including GMs, IMs, and FMs. Standard access these days is by a non-WWW graphical interface which can be downloaded from the site. A Java applet is available but in my opinion, the platform specific interfaces are much better. Free registration provides a 7 day limited trial. Membership costs $49/year US and allows unlimited playing time. In my opinion, this is the BEST site to play online chess in the world!
iChess Play and watch games using any Java enabled browser. Free.
It's Your Turn Play chess against individuals. You will need to register (free) to play.
Red Hot Pawn You can play one on one games with other registered players or play against the Rival chess engine at varying levels of difficulty. Free registration.
SICO Ten communal boards to play the next move on. Not only play standard chess but many interesting variants including Kirbies and Vampires.
